The New South Wales government has approved a $1.4 billion hospital in Bankstown, marking the largest single capital investment in a public hospital in the state’s history. Demolition and site remediation are underway in Sydney’s south-west, with main construction set to begin in 2027.
Multiplex to Lead Construction as Design Finalizes
Multiplex will serve as the early contractor involvement partner for the project. The firm will collaborate with designers, clinicians, and hospital staff to complete the facility’s design before construction starts. State officials called the approval a key milestone for what they described as the most ambitious public hospital investment NSW has ever pursued.
Site work continues, with remediation expected to last through 2026. The project received approval under the State Significant Development designation, reserved for major infrastructure with broad public impact.

A 14-Story Hospital Designed for Growing Demand
The 14-story hospital will feature a multi-story car park, an expanded emergency department, operating theaters, and an intensive care unit. Specialized services will include maternity care, mental health inpatient units, ambulatory care, cancer treatment, and aged care.
Plans also include a dedicated emergency drop-off area and parking for patients and carers. The facility aims to meet the needs of Sydney’s rapidly growing south-west. The design accounts for future public transport links, such as the planned Bankstown Metro station.
Government Highlights Investment and Accessibility
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park stated the project is part of a $3.8 billion investment in Western Sydney hospitals over the next four years. “The new Bankstown Hospital will provide more beds and treatment spaces to serve the growing and diverse community,” he said.

Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully noted the hospital’s proximity to public transport would ease access for patients, staff, and visitors. “This approval benefits Bankstown by bringing modern health facilities closer to residents,” he said.
Consultations with hospital staff, carers, patients, and community members will continue as design details are refined. Officials expect to finalize the hospital’s full service offerings as planning progresses.
The Bankstown Hospital development aligns with broader infrastructure efforts in Western Sydney. Another project, the $540 million Westmead Centre for Mental Health, recently reached a construction milestone in the region’s healthcare expansion.
